History

Born and raised by the Carta Yngvi was brought up communally in a very tough environment, closest to one other dwarf his age called Gunnar. They both call themselves brothers. Family in the Carta is complicated. It's violent. It's about learning to do what you will to survive.
As he grew up he got involved more heavily in Carta work (lyrium smuggling, weapons smuggling, illegal gambling, overlaps with the Coterie work, protection rackets, all the usual Carta highlights) and showed that he did in fact have a pretty bright mind. And a tendency to get in trouble. So he learnt to be a confidence trickster/grifter. Got the artificer skills started.
Finally proving himself enough to get to graduate from Darktown to Lowtown and beyond, Yngvi met Asher Hardie and eventually got offered the chance in his early teens to become part of The Boneflayers with Gunnar. They didn't leave the Carta. It was good for business to have two boys off with a mercenary company.
Besides the whole Arishok business kicked off.
So Yngvi saw the world for several years. Wheeling and dealing. Fighting. The Inquisition happened. Asher joined. Asher died. They took his body to the hold.
Yngvi joined the Inquisition and did a lot and began to question his place in things re: dwarves especially. It blew up in his face predictably because mages are selfish.
Notable highlight of that time he went to Orzammar for the Carta with the Inquisition and there was red lyrium and it was terrible because yes it's a mercy kill but it was senseless and it finally pushed him to really start talking about his part in being complicit in the evils of the Carta and yes, Orzammar too.
Yngvi is returning to the Inquisition after leaving prior to everyone leaving for Ghislain. Yngvi left with the Boneflayer to go on jobs in Ferelden to be out of the Carta's reach for the moment; his father had been making a play to see where Yngvi would be pulled between Inquisition or Carta. Yngvi is still thinking about leaving the Carta but with the bulk of the Inquisition gone from Kirkwall he had concerns regarding how safe he'd be if they came kocking. Equally, in his opinion, the Inquisition as a whole hadn't done enough to warrant Yngvi going off to spill his blood for Orlais.
Not for that pay.

Personality

Yngvi likes to lie. Yngvi likes to tell many lies some of which live in the truth, some of which have skirted close to it and others that have never even heard of this thing you call the truth because he feels comfortable that way. In telling a story. In having that bit of control over how he tells his life to you because it's a good way to see how people react because when you're a short dwarf who's lived a shit life, being able to tell a lie can save you. He excels at trying to live in a refuge of audacity especially when upset or uncomfortable because he'd rather not.

After all, people will shrug off or laugh at 'I ate my brothers and sisters' if you've told lots of lies and tall tales instead of maybe realising what that means if there were a bunch of you in Darktown in comptetion with each other, all trying to survive and taking the food out of the mouths of each other.

There are few Yngvi trusts with the unedited version of himself but when he does that trust is absolute until it isn't. He is stupendously loyal to a fault to the chosen few who get there, who get to see the messy parts of himself he doesn't understand or know what to do with. Because he wasn't allowed to have anything that was 'his' growing up and that included his own personal feelings so he's had some catching up to do. But that trust can be taken away with careless words and actions and might never be earned back but he'd open a vein if he loves you.

He's comfortable with looking at violence in the moment, same with pragmatism, but afterwards it tends to stick to him now he's had time to be away from his upbringing - one where you were only to have absolute loyalty to the Carta and nothing else - and he's someone living with a tremendous amount of guilt about something he never had control over. After all, Yngvi didn't choose to be born to the Carta. He was too small to know he wanted to do more than please people at first and tha he didn't want to go hungry or cold and that he had to please people to do that. He didn't know the suffering involved in his food, his blankets, his medicine. But as an adult he does and he still wonders how you make it right, or if you can make it right at all.

Not that he'd tell most people that, better to just remind people that siblings are frogspawn and geese have teeth you know.

Opinions & Affiliations

Orzmmar is a terrible place full of terrible people (minus the Casteless) that he has complicated opinions on due to a level of being complicit in the Casteless situation due to the Carta but the whole thing needs to be overthrown, the entire Caste system gutted, and he'd shed no tears for it.

The Dalish remind him of Orzammar. True elves trying to tell city elves how to be going on and on about their ways which is a hill he'd die on seeing as he's half-raised in the healthier part of his life by an elfblood and a city elf. The Dalish can also rot for all he cares.

Mages need to get over themselves. Be part of the world. The world where you are not the only ones who had a rough go. Where other people would kill for all that you had because guess what: people were watched and are watched, get beaten for not being right with less people to watch their backs then you, with no roof over their heads and no meals. And there are good reasons to be scared of mages.

Templars...well he's also conflicted. Some are okay. Some are awful. He's sold them a lot of lyrium and feels bad about that when he sees how they've gone because that's all the doing of the Chantry which is the biggest con of all that people keep buying into, the Carta wishes it could be half as successful at a con as the Chantry's been.

Strengths & Weaknesses

+ actually stupendously loyal? Like if you do become his friend you have a bro for life he will be there for you.
+ also he's really good with his axes in a fight, really good. Two daggers, pfft, try two axes scrubs.
+ knows all there is to know about the underworld, like, if it's shady underworld stuff, he's going to know it.
+ it's very easy to befriend him, it is astonishingly easy to befriend him. If you're doing it wrong, you're overthinking it.
+ actual charming bastard, no, not even lying. Yngvi was a damn good confidence trickster, grifter and even a honey trap sometimes. Orlais can say what it likes, pretty sure the Carta would've written the book on real tradecraft instead of fopping about in a mask and perfume.
+ really good at making traps.
+ very good understanding of many languages (spoken) of Thedas from all his travels

- actually stupendously loyal? You will not get rid of him, he is a barnacle, I don't know how you would scrape this tiny dwarf off.
- able to eat about a week of food in one sitting because he had zero idea where his next meal was coming from as a kid so yeah he will just eat and eat and eat.
- literally unable to shut up. He is the DVD director's commentary that you cannot mute. You might need to break his jaw.
- short. Even for a dwarf he's pretty short. He had no food and no sunlight in frigging Darktown okay.
- really good at making traps means he does not use this power for good.
- lacks in tact so whatever is there in his tiny peanut brain will just come out with zero filter because wow why are you getting offended what's wrong with you wow you people, you're worse than Orlesians.
- if you hurt him, you have hurt him. He will find it very hard to overcome that. You can probably be friends but that's going to live there forever and be remembered.
- pretty book dumb. He has many street smarts, and he can read and write but unless he is/was told 'Yngvi go learn about this thing' then he is going to have no idea what that is in any great detail but he'll pretend he does. Probably to upset you.
- lies about the book smarts he does indeed have because he wasn't really encouraged to share and outside very few trusted individuals, he's not forthcoming

Motivation

Someone still has to represent the Boneflayers, technically. More than that, there are people (individuals) that he cares about and he doesn't entirely trust the Inquisition as an overall entity to be looking out for them and their safety so he should probably be there. Ditto there aren't really that many dwarves and he recalls himself as the mouthiest of the dwarves so there should be a dwarf. Mouthing off. Looking out for dwarf stuff with 900 mages and a bunch of Dalish elves kicking about you know.

TOO EARLY: Asleep in a pile of twenty nugs and a goose.
MORNING: Breakfast. Finds least dirty/offensive to others clothes. Drags brush through hair, says a prayer to the Lady, feeds the small army of beasts he has. If he's at the Gallows he takes them all for a walk, if he's in Hightown then he'll have done a quick patrol of the area. Tends to go see if he's got messages (he always has messages) from whoever, dodges shady types who might be looking for him. Sketches out trap designs over pots of strong tea.
NOON: Inhales a lunch somewhere busy with a good view.
AFTERNOON: In and around Lowtown and Darktown catching up with people he knows, buying/trading for things that he needs. Checking up on anything the Inquisition might need to know. Generally with the family. Unfortunately.
EVENING: Swings past Hightown before going to the Gallows to make sure things are good, leaves money for whatever things he used up last time he visited, makes sure they have his preferred tea there. Comes back to eat a quick dinner before working on traps for hours until his hands ache.
NIGHT: Works on his traps some more if he can or does a little reading. If he needs to he'll head out to Darktown or Lowtown for family things. If not, this is when he writes letters to the Boneflayers and Aura Hardie.
TOO LATE: Asleep in a pile of twenty nugs and a goose.

INQUISITION DUTIES: Part of the Other Powers project and the Scouting Division, he tends to keep a close eye on the criminal underworld type things mainly the Carta since he's a member (albeit with increasing reluctance) and a member of a mercenary band. Takes up some guard duties as and when needed because he's done that sort of thing, will offer opinions on dwarf matters with zero provocation. Also will offer to make traps, trade components, thieves lanterns etc for those who need them.
OTHER/PERSONAL PROJECTS: Very into nug husbandry! He has so many and he loves them, also he just enjoys making traps even if the traps aren't always for anything of great value in the field it's about keeping his hands busy so if you want to learn tinkering he's your boy.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Guess what he likes the trashy romance books.

Einar; the patriarch;
Head of Yngvi's particular branch of the Carta and Yngvi's father. A thing Yngvi doesn't know but maybe does because Yngvi has many fathers depending on the situation and what it might call for and isn't the head of a thing the father of it all the Maker is the Father of the Chantry or something? A father is a complicated beast at the best of times and when his word is law in the house and much of the undercity with so much blood under his nails, it's difficult to know how to ever see him as a father.

the fathers;
Not his father but the dwarves overseeing much of everything beneath Einar's eye and thus overseeing Yngvi that it's the same as the mothers. They helped to make the decisions and convey instruction to all the rest about investments. Also the ones to strip the sentiment from them all and to teach everyone that loyalty to the Carta comes before all other things and that loyalty is a disease, a pestilence, a plague and that it strangles you good and proper. You can hold two opposite things in your heart of hearts at once and have them both be true. That's how life is.

the mothers;
A collection of stern women that instilled a healthy fear in Yngvi from an early age as well as a respect for women who can get things done with the odds stacked against them. They were instrumental in keeping children alive when they were the children that were meant to be kept alive with what little there was to be had, not women of sentiment but when has sentiment done anything except get you killed? The number of mothers varies whenever he tells his stories but that's the way of the world.

the uncles;
Come and gone so many times that Yngvi loses count of them, the coarse hands and coarser mouths of the Carta. Many have fallen to the Champion, wheat to the scythe. Taught a boy lessons and taught a boy harshly. If a boy made a mistake then a boy didn't eat and losing meals is dangerous in the dark when you're already small. Usually some of the rougher lessons in how to beat someone until it doesn't bother you or squaring off to someone bigger than you, how to take a beating and still laugh like you haven't felt a single blow.

the aunts;
A different beast to the mothers and many of them fell same as uncles did before the Champion before Yngvi was gone with Asher Hardie. Aunts taught lessons just as harsh as uncles but not the same. How to sneak, how to lie, how to weave a tale nice and neat and intricate, how to conceal as many things as your little hands could carry on your person with not a guard or Templar (though what's the difference in Kirkwall) any the wiser when it comes to it?

Hulda; the smuggler;
The Casteless who spoke about it first to Yngvi as a boy in a way no one else ever had, a woman who organises a greater chunk of the lyrium smuggling in and around the Kirkwall area. Wicked grin as sharp as the blades that ruined her face years ago.

the cousins;
It's like with frogs. There's a lot. Then less. Then a few. And you can always hold two opposite things at once in your heart if you're Carta; that Yngvi has no siblings because he ate them and that Yngvi has one sibling and that it's Gunnar when Gunnar isn't his brother. But there are always children in the Carta, they're always looking to invest after all.

the old ones;
Old and grey, skin so aged it might crumble to dust or turn to stone itself. A rare thing to live to a great age for anyone in Kirkwall but to make it to that age in the Carta, so many of them branded though time topside even in the Undercity has faded the marks is not to be sniffed at. Dwarves of great wisdom if you can suffer them but still. To be respected as all the old are. At a distance. Listening to every sixth word.

Gunnar; the brother;
In truth, actually Yngvi's cousin the way these things are counted by the ones with all the names and bloodlines, they were worthy of investment so they ate the rest of their siblings and survived. Escaped Kirkwall together to become Boneflayers. something of an alchemist but wields a sword and shield. Usually in charge of maintaining good relations. The only soul Yngvi was ever honest with in those days.

'Brunswick' (Snorri)
A name ripe for puns, he changed it early and kept his head down, stays out of much of the politics of it all but he'll share his gossip evenly and that's the best you can hope for as the prodigal son isn't it. Said he'd be Rachette's cousin because Yngvi's convinced she'll end up dead without someone reliable like that to be attached to.

Fuckin' Jim. Goes for the knees. Complains a great deal. There are many Jims. His Sunday name is Jimothy, swear to whatever gets you going.

carta bedtime stories;
There's a story taught in the dark where the dark is cold and damp, getting into your bones and lungs but it's your dark and you know it so even if it's full of knives and worse it isn't the same dark that someone else (softer, gentler, walking up above your head) uses to frighten their child at bedtime or during chores or as an object lesson sitting down on an uncomfortable seat because that way they'll pay attention. There's a story and there are siblings, doesn't matter what they are just that they're siblings, that's the important bit, and one sibling gets caught in a rope out at the docks and the other one ties it to themselves to haul them back in. They both drown. Their names were sentiment and hope.

9:34 is when the Boneflayers roster was permanently established with the acquisition of Yngvi and Gunnar at the age of 15/16 making him about 23/24 currently*. 11/12 around the time of the Fifth Blight and refugees flooding into Kirkwall, old enough to be allowed into the upper city but still having to live in a great deal of overcrowding.

*Yngvi is not sure exactly of how old he is but he does know he was only allowed into the upper levels of Kirkwall when he was in the double digits according to the older dwarves.

A born and bred member of Kirkwall's notorious Carta, Yngvi grew up

with the following saying nearly sewn into his veins: Blood or coin, the

Carta always gets its cut. That shows when Yngvi fights, drawing on

his years as a mercenary with the Boneflayers and more before that

on the streets and in the undercity to strike viciously and keep going

as the fight gets bloodier. No he doesn't know what 'brass tacks means'.

silent roll; unlike the regular combat roll employed by a warrior, Yngvi's practiced this until he's got it down to a fine art // more effective on single/small groups of enemies, depends on carry weight and terrain, rarely works on wildlife*

So Yngvi Congealedinagutterson has a long and storied history for someone so young, owing to living in Kirkwall and his involvement first in the Carta, then later with the Boneflayers. He's been part of the Boneflayers for several years, operating all over most of Thedas minus Qunari lands and Tevinter, and he's been around Skyhold since Bloomingtide, usually running odd jobs for Asher.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: What a handsome dwarf like wow, so handsome. No but he has a few scars but good luck disrobing him enough to find them? Some are nasty. There are approximately 900 stories per scar. Hands are the worst for scarring beneath the grime given his main inclination/profession as an artificer. Has a line of Ilde Sauvageon's poetry tattooed on his chest for reasons (I am the war, yes he knows what it means.)

Other tattoos: raven perched on a bear inside his upper right arm for Asher, very difficult to see. Dwarven markings received whilst sober he'd never admit to for protection from harm, especially in battle/on long journeys in various locations. A mural on the left shoulder for the Boneflayers: Amalia's flames around Nasir's bow, coins stacked by Melisende's knives, a one eyed dog for Bronson, crossbow bolts and grey Coterie symbol for Liadan, alchemy bottles/deep mushrooms/elfroot/embrium for Gunnar, crossed axes behind all of it for Asher. Status

Either in the tavern where he will be drinking or seeing someone that owes him money (don't make him sic the rest of the Carta on you, just fucking pay him, where's his money man, where's his money) or he's somewhere around Skyhold. Working on traps. "Working on traps" is a really nice broad definition for the organised sort of chaos that spirals out from Yngvi like a swirling vortex of entropy, don't look at it too long, it looks back and it winks then you're fucked.

Also spends a lot of time in the underforge, where he actually does work. Steals from the kitchens often. Sleeps in the refugee camp unless he can sleep somewhere cosier.

Spends most of his time roaming around Kirkwall but never tends to stay anywhere for too long, not even his lodgings. The Undercity and Darktown claim him like you'd expect but Lady Vauquelin's estate would never turn him away and he's there on a semi-regular basis, same as in Ser Coupe's room that they share. His own Inquisition quarters in the Gallows act mostly as storage.

Avoids the Hanged Man like it's got some sort of festering plague, he'll do his drinking with others in their places if it pleases you from now on or at the Blooming Rose thanks.

History

Note: Yngvi's life is the Gospel According to Yngvi and he will frequently contradict it, whilst daring people to call him out on contradicting it. Do not do that. He's Carta and a mercenary, don't you have self-preservation? Anyway, this is a story all about how...

Young scamp years: Yngvi congealed in the gutters of Kirkwall, the lowest rung of the Carta with no Orzammar ties and indeed no ties that he actually knows of. He was raised communally with other such figures that he came to view as family, mainly one other boy his own age called Gunnar. He and Gunnar became brothers even though technically they all are. (Yngvi will not refer to any of the rest as siblings but he will refer to having a Dad, basically any older dwarf that was looking after them and showing them the ropes. Same with anyone he might call Mum. The stories won't always match up.)
Teenage dirtbag years: Literally. Like, really really literally. Have you been to Darktown? Because that was the stomping/proving ground for young Yngvi where he was involved in your typical sort of Carta business: lyrium smuggling, illegal gambling, weapons smuggling, an uneasy overlap sometimes with the Coterie, a few protection rackets. Yngvi actually had a pretty bright mind and a tendency to get himself in trouble with too much energy but a few of the older guys took Yngvi in while a different few took Gunnar in. Yngvi got traps and how to be a confidence trickster and a grifter, Gunnar got alchemy and what passes for healing in the Carta. (Spoiler it's called chew the elfroot, down this lethal concoction that's mostly firewater and hope you don't die.)
Boneflayers: After a few years honing his Carta stuff and getting to work his way up from Darktown to the quite frankly giddy heights of Lowtown, Yngvi (and Gunnar, from now on if I mention one that means both) met a man with a plan, and his awesome elf second-in-command, and the man's giant walking scar of a dog. That man was Asher Hardie. It was a chance to do something different. See the world. A young dwarf has a yearning okay. (Humans are really stupid, you don't leave the Carta, the Carta gave Yngvi their blessing, Yngvi sent back word.)
After leaving Kirkwall post-Arishok losing his shit with the Boneflayers, Yngvi has since gone farther than he ever thought his little dwarf legs would go. Wheeling and dealing. Fighting. Getting up to no good, making trouble in your neighbourhood (Lex, Gwenaelle, looking at you.)
Most recently he's spent some time in Skyhold in the refugee camp with Asher Hardie before disappearing off with Asher's body. Then he went to see his BFF/presumptive-papa-in-law Emeric. To make off with the silverware and get the Thedosian equivalent of a DUI.

Personality

You know how small dogs don't know that they're small dogs and think that they're really big dogs? Well imagine that as a dwarf. But also roll the Old Spice Man in there. Boom you have Yngvi.

The one true home of Yngvi is not, shockingly, Kirkwall but rather his cosy retreat in the Refuge In Audacity. He is utterly ridiculous about his wheelings and dealings without a care in the world (see: rolling up to the home of Emeric Vauqelin to "liberate" his good brandy and silverware because they're family) and somehow he hasn't been killed. He excels in a particular brand of being over the top in a very specific sort of way. But then he's the confidence guy. The charming guy. (Though that used to just mean 'congratulations you're not Asher'.)

All of this does help to hide the fact that Yngvi is actually a very successful member of both the Carta and a mercenary organisation because he would've been dead long ago otherwise. He can talk his way out of many things, relying on his charm or his wits, though he does take care to have friends in as many groups as possible so someone will come bail out the poor dwarf.

Which is another thing: he'll sell you a tragic backstory. He'll sell you ten tragic backstories for a bargain. He's got no shame about that sort of thing because he wasn't raised to have any sort of scruples when it comes down to it, and all his stories? Well quite frankly he only trusts Gunnar and the Boneflayers, and even the Boneflayers don't know all there is to know about Yngvi. He likes to have a multiple choice past, and attempting to confront Yngvi on it isn't really going to get you anywhere. At all. Ever. Oh he won't hurt you he'll just be a pain in the arse and when that's coming from the Carta is that really something you want? Look at your life, look at your choices.

He has the haziest opinion/sense of what a family unit is due to his upbringing so people that fall into the close friendship bracket are considered family though that can usually extend to anyone he spends prolonged periods of time with. Likewise, friends of friends are automatically considered good friends of Yngvi even if they've never met face to face. But he does get to just comment on all your life choices at will, invade your personal space, and he'll expect you to defend him the odd time a deal goes bad and he can't sort it himself.

Also comes with the most annoying habits: bottomless pit and the internal monologue is stuck on external, you're welcome.

Opinions & Affiliations

Yngvi...does not care. Like he cares kind of but he cares inasmuch as it affects Yngvi, Gunnar, the Boneflayers, and the Carta. (That's how the loyalties go okay.)

Mages and Templars can shut up he'll get your lyrium stop crying you all look so ugly when you cry. Elves he just...literally doesn't care like wow shut up about trees you're making him want to take a piss is that the point? Do you want to see his dick there are easier ways? Any tall horned people do not step on him he'll bite.

Orzammar can get wrecked. Basically all nobles can get wrecked unless they give him money. Grey Wardens can get wrecked like you are not special shut up no one even cares???

Yngvi is cooler (in his tiny peanut brain) than anyone else, shut up everyone you're so annoying.

+ it's pretty difficult to annoy/upset/offend him. He is very cheerful about who and what he is, look at the surname Asher gave him that he adopted with gusto!
+ actual charming bastard, no, not even lying. Yngvi was a damn good confidence trickster, grifter and even a honey trap sometimes. Orlais can say what it likes, pretty sure the Carta would've written the book on real tradecraft instead of fopping about in a mask and perfume.
